Thank You, Art Schwartz

There is something special about that middle stretch of New York State from just west of Albany down through the Southern Tier. As a food lover, I could tell you that it’s the Spiedie sandwiches or Brooks BBQ, but honestly, it’s more than that. It’s a place I’ve always felt an affinity for and part of the reason why Erin and I own a home there. But in truth, it’s because some of the nicest, most decent, and hard-working people I’ve ever met come from that part of the world. Art Schwartz is a great example of all of those characteristics.

After some large turnovers in the Trustee's leadership (Rudy Maurer moving south, Don Baker taking the chair around the block one more time), Art stepped into the role. By his own description, more of a doer than a chair, he entered the work at full speed and 100% commitment. As we’ve noted so many times, taking care of our wonderful campus takes a lot of work and there were plenty of weeks during his tenure when I was “sure” that Art slept on campus. I know for certain that there were many weeks when he was present on campus more than I was. When he wasn’t opening doors and meeting with folks, Art also took it upon himself to streamline our vendors and put together a list of who to call when something needed fixing. Being retired certainly helped him in this endeavor but so did Carol, who supported Art in giving his all. I certainly understand that the reward for good work is more work, but I’m also pleased that Art knew when to step away. As he explained to me, there are grandkids to see and Brooks BBQ to eat. If you see him or Carol in church in between those two pursuits, make sure to thank both of them for all their hard work. Thanks for everything, Art!
